Option 1: Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU)
If your computer works perfectly but doesn't meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, you don't have to throw it away. Microsoft offers an Extended Security Update (ESU) program.
- What it does: It keeps your Windows 10 machine safe with critical security patches through October 12, 2028.
- The cost: For personal devices running version 22H2 or above, Microsoft provides affordable options (including free enrollment via Microsoft account sync, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a small fee around $45 AUD).
Option 2: Upgrade to a New PC
If your computer is more than 5 or 6 years old, it might be the perfect time to upgrade your hardware.
- The Benefit: Modern Windows 11 and Copilot+ PCs are significantly faster, have much better battery life, and feature advanced built-in security chips that protect your personal data.
Option 3: Switch to an Alternative Operating System
If you love your current laptop or desktop and want to keep using it entirely for free without Windows, you can convert it into a lightweight machine using an alternative operating system like ChromeOS Flex or Linux.
- The Benefit: These systems breathe new life into older hardware, making them excellent for web browsing, checking emails, and streaming videos.
